Opening Day 2018! Saturday, May 26!

Paddle instruction on the NBBC dock. Public paddle, August 19, 2017

North Brooklyn Boat Club’s 2018 Opening Day celebration will feature the good things in life: tasty food, cold drinks, fellowship, fire, and paddling on the waters of New York City!

Come join us:

  • Saturday, May 26, 2018
  • Broadway Stages Boatyard
  • 51 Ash St., Greenpoint, Brooklyn
  • 1 PM – 6 PM

This is the season’s first chance for NBBC to do what we do best: fulfill our mission to enable access to the waterways of New York City for the residents of our local community.

As at all our Public Paddles, on Opening Day we’ll welcome walk-up participants to join trained NBBC guides for short trips on Newtown Creek and often out toward the East River, where we pause to take in the view of Manhattan.

We’ll use our 25′ big canoes, the perfect vessel for working together to forge a unique NYC experience, seeing our city in a new way.

Public paddles are free and open to everyone. We especially hope to welcome our Greenpoint neighbors and members of other community organizations. Come down to our community boatyard, and learn more about Greenpoint’s history, environmental challenges and successes, and residents. Get out on the water and see the neighborhood as you never have before!

We will try to get everyone who shows up on the water, but the earlier you arrive the better your chance of going on a paddle. Paddling is free! And we serve beverages, tasty veggie food, and other snacks. Our public paddles are child and pet friendly.

For this year’s schedule, please check our Calendar of Events and the Public Paddle page on our blog.

NBBC is your community boat club. Come join us to start up another great season of community, advocacy, adventure, and paddling!

We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.

NBBC Is Proud to Cohost the 2018 Paddling Film Festival in New York

Since 2006, the Paddling Film Festival has delivered the world’s best kayaking, SUP, canoe, and whitewater films to screens around the globe. This year’s lineup will transport you to Scotland, where you’ll experience a solo stand-up paddleboard circumnavigation of the Isle of Skye; British Columbia, where you’ll embark on a bikepacking and packraft expedition through the heart of sacred headwaters; Northern Pakistan and the extreme whitewater of the Rondu Gorge on the Indus River; and many other destinations for breathtaking adventures.

North Brooklyn Boat Club and the NY-NNJ chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club are thrilled to be cohosting the 2018 Paddling Film Festival World Tour in New York City. Please join us on Tuesday, May 22, at Symphony Space for an evening of river, lake, and ocean beauty and adventure that will leave you inspired for the 2018 paddling season!

At these free, informal paddles, North Brooklyn Boat Club welcomes walk-up participants to join trained NBBC guides for short trips on Newtown Creek and often out toward the East River, where we often pause to take in the view of Manhattan. Usually we take out our 25′ big canoes. Everyone on the paddle works together under expert instruction to forge a unique NYC experience, seeing the city in a new way. We might also take out regular tandem canoes or sit-on-top kayaks depending on the weather.

Public paddles are free and open to everyone. We especially hope to welcome our Brooklyn neighbors to the boatyard to see the city the way we love to see it — from the water. In particular, we are proud to welcome other nonprofit community organizations to join us and relax from the hard work of making the world a little bit better.

We will try to get everyone who shows up on the water using our war canoes, but the earlier you arrive the better your chance of going on a paddle. All our voyages are led by certified trip leaders and include some of the best views of the city. This is a great way to check out the boatyard and get a chance to explore the local waterways. Paddling is free! And we serve beverages, veggie dogs, hot dogs, and other snacks. Our public paddles are child and pet friendly.
